Romans 5:12, “Just as through one man sin entered into the world and through sin, death, and thus death passed to all men, because all sinned.”
I had a boy come up to me on Wednesday night (a third grader) and tell me that he wished girls never existed because when Eve sinned she caused so many problems. I told him that the Bible speaks a lot about Adam’s responsibility and how he sinned and because of him, death has come to all. He was still confused so I pointed out that the problems of the world are a result of everyone sinning, not just Adam and Eve. We talked about his own sin (mostly disobeying his parents and lying) and how that contributes to various problems. Once he saw the reality that his sin has caused problems too, he began to scale back on blaming Eve.
I think this is the point of Paul’s argument here. Adam and Eve had a choice to obey or disobey God. When they chose the latter, corruption and everything bad entered into the world. However, we can’t blame everything on Adam and Eve because all men have played a role in sin and death, including us. Sure, through Adam sin and death entered the world, but we’ve shown to be just as guilty because of our own sin. When we have the perspective that we’re all sinners and don’t deserve grace it helps us understand the problems of the world a little better and it also gives us a greater appreciation for the work of Christ.
