Romans 5:7, “For hardly will someone die for a righteous man, though possibly for the good man one would dare even to die.

As is the case with any verse in Scripture, this one is best understood in its context. We will get a better feel for the context when we translate verse eight tomorrow, but it does suffice for now to point out the general principle that Paul has established here: hardly does one choose to die for another, especially one that is not his/her friend. Dying for a friend is the highest form of friendship (Joh 15:13), but it’s almost unheard of that someone would die for an enemy, which is exactly what God has done (we will see more of this tomorrow).
