Glorious Creation

I’ve been in NC for 2 months now and have come to realize a few things:

*Learning is still fun.

*NC is a beautiful state (as I write this it’s about 70 and not a cloud in the sky)!

*No one in NC knows the exact reason why it’s the “tar heel state.”

*God is much, much bigger than we could ever imagine.

Daily, I’m reminded of this last point. I’m too often guilty of under-appreciating His GLORIOUS POWER IN CREATION. How often do I go outside to simply appreciate what was formed by the word and power of God? Not enough. Paul wrote in verse 20 of Romans one, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” In other words, creation points us to God (i.e. Psalm 19:1-6).

Think about this (numbers from an unfinished study):

* The closest star system after the sun is the Alpha Centauri, which happens to be 4.3 light years away (light travels at 186,000 mi/sec). Other stars in the Milky Way galaxy are more than 100,000 light years away.

* There are too many stars to count and our galaxy is just one of over a hundred billion.

* There are over 10 million species (bottom on the hierarchy of classification) on earth. Some estimate this number to be more like 100 million.

* Scientists have sampled top soil in the forest and found an average of 1,356 living creatures including 865 mites, 765 springtails, 22 millipedes, 24 adult beetles and if they were to have looked for microscopic population, they would have found up to 2 billion bacteria, and millions of fungi, protozoa, and algae. Oh, and this was the average for ONE TEASOON of soil!

* The Peregrine Falcon can dive at over 200 mph (fastest animal in the world).

* And let’s not forget God’s most glorious creation of all, human beings. People were created in the image of God.

Wherever you find yourself, you’re among the creation of God and creation is a powerful tool in reaching people for Christ. Notice in Psalm 19:4, the psalmist writes that creation speaks of God and “Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the inhabited world.” So, why not start with the beginning when sharing God’s meta-narrative to those who have never heard it? After all, the world around us is one thing we all have in common.

  1. Nate,

Could not the vastness of our universe considered in tandem with the minute and localized bit of unsustainable life on one planet show that, though the universe is enormous, it is not the product of a ‘design’ that is intended to foster life, or as Jesus put it ‘life abundantly’? Is not all the talk you mentioned about the vastness—emptiness really—of the universe actually a testimony to the fact that, if there is a God, he is not very interested in life?

Just a thought. And not get me wronf, I am committed to trust that God exists, but it seemed that the things which you mentioned about the universe are not exactly helpful in trusting this.
